Book Club Comrades – Continuing Virtual Book Discussions with Added Adventures – “SIP & SAVOR” Series

April 20, 2022 | Sip & Savor

The cold and snowy winter weather couldn’t keep us away from a variety of warm book discussions and adventures...

We started the New Year with another spectacular Book Tasting flight, “Sip & Savor,” with our Book Clubbers this January. Paging through short stories and essays was a great way to keep the winter blues at bay!

Throughout this flight, we traveled to different parts of the world with two of our curated stories and virtual cooking classes, led by our culinary specialist, Jessica.

After diving into Afterparties by Anthony Veasna So, a “vibrant story collection about Cambodian-American life”, we knew a delicious, traditional Cambodian dish would make the perfect pairing to compliment the book and it’s accompanying discussion.

Another “unusual, captivating portrait of a family” was up next: Late Migrations: A Natural History of Love and Loss by Margaret Renkl…

In addition to chatting about the “cycles of joy and grief that inscribe human lives within the natural world”, we physically immersed ourselves in nature with our paired reading activity. Nicole from Garden Outside the Box graciously taught us how to set up an herbal tea garden during a virtual class offered through Class Bento.

We learned so much while setting up our gardens, and LOVED that this experience echoed the ongoing cycles of nature that the author explores in her short stories. Even though WE LOST some of our little sprouts, we were able to plant more seeds and watch a new batch survive (how fitting)!

The fourth book of our Book Tasting Flight, Love Like That by Emma Duffy Comparone, was a “sharp, witty book about brilliant, broken women that are just the right amount wrong”, and called for another rich tasting experience.

It may have been quite the wintry day for an in-person pop-up, but that did not stop us from having real time adventures together!

While enjoying the private room at Beautiful Rind, Randall took us to various regions during our cheese and wine class. We did not want the “sipping and savoring” to end, once we learned about and sampled all the different cheeses and wines that were part of the class!

As another perk to our pop-up events, we always offer some shopping therapy at our Book Bar, and this time was no exception…

Book Club attendees were able to treat themselves and / or other loved ones to new and used books, along with thoughtful book pairing *garnishes* from some of our favorite local small businesses:  Edgewater Candles, Homebody, Veruca Chocolates and Fly Paper

What a perfect way to take a break between the class and book discussion!
