Perseverance: To keep working at something even though it’s hard

Take a  moment and think about all of the times you’ve had to call upon your own spirit of perseverance in the last 24 hours. From small actions (like getting out of bed when you’d rather sleep) to big actions (carrying on after a big setback involving health, family, school, or work); being willing and able to persevere is critical in life.

Sometimes we feel like we’re the only ones who experience struggles. The books in this collection will help with that! They bring examples of diverse characters in diverse circumstances with diverse approaches to perseverance. Reading and talking about these books together might give your family some inspiration and new ideas for tackling future challenges together.

Below you’ll find books, conversation launchers and activities that are appropriate for 6th, 7th and 8th Graders around the concept of “Perseverance”.

All Thirteen: The Incredible Cave Rescue of The Thai Boys’ Soccer Team

By Christina Soontornvat

Why We LOVE This Book

In 2018, twelve young soccer players and their coach were trapped in a cave because of rapidly rising waters, due to early heavy rains. Family, friends, rescuers, the Thai government, and other individuals stopped at nothing, in order to get the boys and coach out safely. The boys and coach refused to give up as well. The rescue would most likely not have been a success if it was not for everyone’s drive and perseverance.
