In honor of our “Taking a Stand” theme, we are spotlighting a nonprofit that reflects the work of Nza-Ari Khepra, one of the young activists who is featured in the picture book, No Voice Too Small.
As the book explains, Nza-Ari and her friends were inspired to prevent deaths from gun violence after their young friend, Hadiya Pendeleton, was shot on a Chicago playground.
The “wear orange” movement is supported by many organizations that are working to address the deep andcomplex societal issues that ultimately impact the prevalence of gun violence.
National End Gun Violence Day is held on the first Friday in June, and wearing orange is encouraged to bring awareness to that day. The color orange is symbolic, as it is the color that hunters wear to warn other hunters not to shoot.

Two amazing women are working on a Black Owned Business project that will provide an essential service while creating a welcoming space where communities can comfortably gather.
“TLC will be more than just a laundromat. Imagine washing your clothes, sitting in a comfortable chair or sofa, using free WiFi and having a cup of coffee brought to you… AND an extra space for Yoga and meditation, book readings for children, and more family engagement. It will give a mundane chore a special kind of vibe that we can all enjoy.”
We look forward to helping them build the reading room in their up-and-coming Chicagoland location some day! Until then, let’s help get this special project off the ground…
