Taking A Stand – Guest Contributor – Standing Strong Like Some of the Greats

March 1, 2021 | Taking a Stand

When thinking of one who has taken a stand, I can think of few others in American History more prominent than MLK Jr for this feat…

It is completely coincidental that I chose today to write, but seemingly appropriate in that it is Martin Luther King Day. In this world where there is such chaos and division, it is comforting, if not inspiring, to reflect on those who have taken a stand. What did it take for them to do so? How have others’ eyes been opened (or continued closed) because they did so? What would it take for us to stand strong like some of the greats?

Taking a stand on an issue takes passion to begin and courage to continue. Passion is like a match; it lights quickly, but burns out before you know it. Courage is more like a campfire; it takes effort to get started and keep going. But if it continues to be fed, it will burn and keep all warm with its light.

The last year has given countless ways one could take a stand. Unfortunately, going out to march in the streets or attend rallies was not something that fit into my life this year. Not to say I never have or that I never will again; but this year was one where money being sent to a cause and peaceful thoughts and prayers for those involved, were more my style.

I am halfway through the fourth decade of my life, and I can say for certain that I cannot stay quiet when something is wrong around me. Although it is much easier to just look the other way or keep my head in the sand, I would not be able to sleep at night if I did so.

I think this started in a more thoughtful manner after my daughter was born. I remember thinking at her first doctor’s appointment, I am on duty from here on out… no calling in sick, no shortcuts, no excuses. I am this little one’s voice; I am the one that will need to ask the questions, remember the answers, and take notice of things, minute and major, in order to be sure she gets the best care and attention she deserves.

I was the one who could make her world better or worse, depending on choices I’d make and stands I’d take. As a single mom, I knew there may be times I’d need to stand strong when faced with critical people. I could not back down for anything dealing with my baby. Little did I know at the time, that was the easy part.

The stands I’ve taken (or sometimes didn’t) have been carefully watched with those growing eyes. Thankfully, during elementary school my daughter stood up to the class bully not just for herself, but also for a friend. I can’t tell you how proud I was to know she would not let wrong-doings go unnoticed and was brave enough to do something (non-violent) about it. I kind of felt this must have happened because I’d done such a great job raising a young lady who wasn’t afraid to take a stand, right?

Well, the real test has come as a teenager. Not that my daughter would stand for blatant wrong-doings — and she has had much to say about this chaotic year — but her confident elementary-school-self has morphed into an overly self-aware teen, who would rather not have attention brought to herself about anything. Guess if my ego wants to boast about the confident stage, I also get to take credit for the timid teenage one, huh?

Of course, I know there will be more stages for my daughter no matter what type of parenting I do. I just hope I am able to show her the importance of taking a stand when faced with inequities for herself or others. I want her to live her life with passion and courage and look for ways to make the world better even when confronted with chaos, ignorance, or fear.
